What to bring & documents
What do I need to bring to the Akron BMV? It depends on the transaction. A plate renewal needs little more than your current registration (or plate number) and payment; a REAL ID needs proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of Ohio residency. See the full checklist by transaction on what to bring.
What documents do I need for a REAL ID in Ohio? One proof of identity (e.g., U.S. passport or certified birth certificate), proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Ohio residency (such as a utility bill and a bank statement) showing your name and current address. Bring originals, copies generally aren’t accepted. Details on REAL ID.
Do I need a REAL ID? You need a REAL ID (or another federally accepted ID like a passport) to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities. A standard Ohio license still works for driving and everyday ID. Compare them in REAL ID vs. standard license.
Titles vs. registration (the Ohio split)
Does the Akron BMV issue vehicle titles? No. Titles are issued by the County Clerk of Courts, not the BMV. In Summit County, that’s the Clerk of Courts Auto Title Division. The Akron BMV handles registration, plates, and driver license/ID.
I just bought a car, what’s the order? First title the vehicle at the County Clerk of Courts, then register and plate it at the Akron BMV. Bring the title (or dealer paperwork) when you come to register. See BMV vs. Clerk of Courts in Ohio and title transfer.
Where do I get a duplicate or replacement title? At the County Clerk of Courts, not the BMV. See duplicate title.
Plates & registration
Can I renew my license plates at the Akron BMV? Yes, any Ohio deputy registrar can process your plate (registration) renewal regardless of which Summit County city you live in. You can also renew online at bmv.ohio.gov; in-person is best for plate transfers, new plates, or a same-day sticker. See license plate renewal.
Can I transfer plates between my vehicles? Yes. Bring the plates, your registration, and the title or registration for the vehicle you’re transferring to. See transfer license plates.
What if my plates or stickers are lost or stolen? You can get replacements at the Akron BMV. See lost or stolen plates: what to do.
My registration is late, is there a grace period? Ohio charges a late fee once your registration lapses; there’s no extended grace period. Renew as soon as possible. See renewal grace period & late fees.
Driver license & ID
Can I take my driving test at the Akron BMV? No. The current AkronBMV.com service scope does not explicitly list on-site knowledge or skills testing. Use the official state online or testing-location path for knowledge tests and state exam stations for road/skills tests. Once you pass, the Akron BMV can issue your permit or license. See driving skills test and knowledge test & permit.
Can I renew my driver license at the Akron BMV? Yes. Bring the required identity and residency documents. See driver license renewal.
I’m new to Ohio, what do I do? New residents transfer their out-of-state license and register their vehicles within the state’s required window. See new Ohio resident.
