The Akron BMV (Deputy Registrar 7731) accepts common in-person payment methods for BMV transactions, including cash, check, money order, and card payments where allowed. The thing to know before you pay: card payments can carry a separate processing fee, while cash, check, and money order avoid that card-processing charge. This page lays out how BMV transaction fees are structured and how to avoid surprises at the register.

The two fees to understand

Ohio BMV pricing has two layers people often confuse:

  1. The deputy registrar (DR) service fee. Every in-person transaction at a deputy registrar includes a service fee, it is how privately operated registrar agencies like the Akron BMV are funded. This fee is already baked into the totals you see on our Fees page (for example, the registration “DR fee” tiers). It applies no matter how you pay.
  2. The card processing fee. If you pay by credit or debit card, a separate processing fee can be added on top. Pay by cash, check, or money order and you avoid that card-processing fee.

If you want to skip any card-processing charge, bring cash, check, or money order.

How to avoid paying more than you need to

  • Pay by cash, check, or money order to skip the card processing fee on larger transactions.
  • Know your total before you arrive. Check Fees so you bring the right amount, DR service fees and (in some counties) permissive taxes are already included in those figures.
  • Bring a backup. A second method covers a declined card or a reader outage.
  • For title payments, pay at the Clerk. Title fees are paid to the County Clerk of Courts, not here, see below.

Titles are paid at the County Clerk of Courts

Because Ohio titles are issued by the County Clerk of Courts, the title fee is paid to the Clerk’s title office, not to the Akron BMV. The statewide title fee is $18; some counties may charge $23 if local officials approve the additional charge. Questions people ask at the counter

Does the Akron BMV take credit cards? Yes. Credit and debit cards are accepted for many transactions, and a separate card-processing fee may apply. Cash, check, and money order avoid card-processing fees.

Is there a fee to use a card at the BMV? Yes, a separate card processing fee on top of your transaction. It is small on a typical renewal but scales with the amount. Pay by cash or money order to skip it.

Does the Akron BMV accept personal checks? Deputy registrars generally accept checks and money orders in person. Bring ID and a backup method in case a check cannot be accepted.

Can I pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay? If mobile wallets are accepted, they are processed as card payments and the card fee applies.

Why is there a “service fee” on my BMV transaction? That is the deputy registrar service fee, which funds the registrar agency and is included in the published Ohio fees. It applies regardless of payment method and is separate from the card processing fee.

How do I pay for a title? Title fees go to the County Clerk of Courts title office, not the BMV. The statewide title fee is $18; some counties may charge $23 if local officials approve the additional charge.
