When a holiday falls on a weekend

When a holiday lands on a Saturday, public offices often observe it the preceding Friday; when it lands on a Sunday, they often observe it the following Monday. In 2026, Independence Day is observed on Friday, July 3.

Around the holidays: expect crowds

The days immediately before and after a closure are some of the busiest of the year, as everyone shifts their errands around the closed day. If you must visit near a holiday:

  • Go mid-morning or mid-afternoon midweek if you have a choice, see Wait times.
  • Hold your spot with Get in Line Online so you are not standing in a long lobby line.
  • Better yet, skip the trip if your task can be done online (next section).

Closed for the holiday? You may not need the counter

When the office is closed, many tasks still go through:

  • Renew vehicle registration online at OPLATES.com, any time, including holidays. See Online vs. in-person.
  • Renew an eligible driver license online if you are not in the photo/vision cycle. See Driver license renewal.

Tasks that need the counter, REAL ID, first licenses, new-resident transfers, placards, VIN inspections, will have to wait until the office reopens. Plan ahead so a closure does not catch you against a deadline.

Renewing right before a closure (don’t get caught late)

Ohio charges a $10 late fee on certain vehicle registrations renewed more than 30 days late. A holiday closure is not an excuse the system recognizes, so if your renewal is due around a holiday, renew early, online, or in person on an open day. You can renew a registration up to 90 days early, which is the easiest way to avoid a holiday-timing problem.
