Studying for your Ohio permit test in the Akron area? What the knowledge test is
The knowledge test is the written exam that proves you understand Ohio traffic laws, road signs, and safe-driving rules, the first hurdle on the way to a temporary permit. It is 40 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer 75% correctly to pass. Questions cover signs, signals, right-of-way, speed and following rules, and safe-driving practices, all drawn from the Ohio Driver Manual (Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws).
Pass the knowledge test and a vision screening, and you’re issued a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC), your “temps.” That permit is what lets a new driver practice before the road test.
Who needs it
- New teen drivers (you can apply for temps at 15 years, 6 months).
- Adults getting a first Ohio license.
- Motorcycle applicants, who take a separate motorcycle knowledge test.
If you’re a new Ohio resident with an unexpired out-of-state license, you generally do not retake the knowledge test, you transfer your license with a vision screening instead. See new Ohio resident.
Where you can take the knowledge test
Ohio gives you more than one path. Here’s how to think about it:

The safe plan: if you can take the test online, do that and then come to the Akron BMV with proof to get your TIPIC issued. If you prefer in person, use the official state locator or scheduling system for a testing location, then return to the Akron BMV for issuance.
How to study and pass
- Read the Ohio Driver Manual cover to cover, it’s free on bmv.ohio.gov and every test question comes from it.
- Focus on signs and right-of-way, the two areas that trip people up most.
- Take practice tests to get used to the 40-question, 75%-to-pass format.
- Know the failing consequence: if you don’t pass, you’ll need to come back and retake it, so prepare rather than wing it.
What to bring (for the permit)
To be issued your TIPIC after passing, bring originals or certified copies:
- Proof of full legal name, date of birth, and legal presence (certified U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport)
- Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, or 1099)
- Two proofs of Ohio residency from different sources
- Proof of any legal name change, if applicable
- If under 18: a parent or legal guardian present to sign, with their own valid ID
- Proof you passed the knowledge test (if taken online/elsewhere) and your vision screening
- Payment for the permit fee

What causes return trips
- Assuming every BMV gives the test. Not all deputy registrars administer the knowledge test on-site, confirm first or take it online / at a driver exam station.
- Skipping the manual. Every question comes from the Ohio Driver Manual; reading it is the difference between passing and a repeat trip.
- Coming without a parent (under 18). A parent or guardian must be present to sign for the permit.
- Forgetting the second proof of address. You need two, from different sources.
- Confusing the knowledge test with the road test. The knowledge test is written; the road/skills test is separate and given at a state exam station. See driving skills test.
