The Akron BMV, Ohio Deputy Registrar Agency 7731, operated by the Northeast Ohio Automobile Dealers Association at 688 Wolf Ledges Parkway, is proud to handle military and veterans services for service members, veterans, and their families across Summit County. As a deputy registrar, we take care of the BMV side: driver license and state ID transactions, vehicle registration, military and veteran license plates, the Armed Forces designation, and disability placards. One thing we do not do is issue vehicle titles; those come from the County Clerk of Courts (see our titles hub). This page walks through each benefit, who qualifies, and what to bring.

Armed Forces designation on your license or ID
Any veteran, active-duty, or reserve member of the U.S. armed forces may add an “Armed Forces” emblem to their Ohio driver license or state ID card. It’s a simple way to carry recognition of your service and can streamline access to certain veteran benefits.
- There is no fee for the emblem itself. You pay only the normal first-issuance, renewal, or duplicate credential fee to get the physical card showing the designation.
- Bring proof of service, typically a DD-214 or equivalent documentation establishing eligibility.
- You can add the designation when you renew or get a duplicate so you don’t pay twice.
The “Veteran” designation is added at the BMV, but note: Ohio’s official Veteran ID verification and certain courthouse-issued veteran ID cards are separate programs. Bring your DD-214 and ask us what applies.
Military & veteran license plates
Ohio offers a broad family of military and veteran license plates, for branches, eras of service, awards, and status (active, reserve, retired, Gold Star family, and more).
- The Ohio BMV fee schedule lists military plates as having no additional annual plate fee beyond standard registration.
- Some military and veteran plate benefits can affect what you pay, but eligibility is plate-specific and depends on the proof attached to your record.
- Many plates require proof of eligibility (DD-214, a VA award/rating letter, or the relevant certification), and some are by application rather than over-the-counter.

Plate and registration fee questions
Some military and veteran plate benefits can change what you pay, but the exact treatment depends on the plate type, the law attached to that plate, and the proof you bring. The Ohio BMV fee schedule lists military plates as having no additional annual plate fee; standard registration still applies unless a separate statutory waiver applies to your record. Bring your DD-214, VA rating letter, or other eligibility documentation so the counter can apply the correct fee treatment.
Disability placards for veterans
If you have a qualifying mobility disability, you may also need a removable windshield placard or disability plates, handled here at the Akron BMV with a physician’s certification. The placard and the veteran-disability plate are separate benefits and can be combined. Deployment, out-of-state duty & extensions
Ohio extends accommodations to service members stationed away from home:
- Driver license / ID renewals can often be handled by mail or online while you’re stationed out of state, you don’t lose your Ohio credential because of duty location.
- Ohio recognizes federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) protections, which can affect registration and renewal timing for deployed members.
- Spouses and dependents may have their own accommodations for licensing and registration.

What to bring (checklist)
- Proof of service, DD-214 or equivalent
- VA rating / award letter, if claiming a disability plate or plate-related fee benefit
- Your current Ohio driver license or state ID
- For registration: your Ohio title (or memorandum title) and proof of insurance
- Payment for any standard credential or registration fee that still applies
- For a placard: completed BMV 4826 with physician certification (see handicap placard & plates)

What causes return trips
- Leaving your DD-214 at home. Almost every military benefit here needs proof of service.
- Arriving without eligibility documents. Bring your VA rating letter or other proof before asking staff to apply a plate-related fee benefit.
- Confusing the title with registration. We register and plate; titles are at the County Clerk of Courts.
- Assuming the emblem costs extra. The Armed Forces designation is free; you only pay the normal credential fee.
- Missing the placard option. Veteran-disability plates and a windshield placard are separate and can be combined.
Questions people ask at the counter

Are veterans exempt from registration fees? Those qualifying for the Veterans with Disabilities or Purple Heart Disability plates may not have to pay registration fees on the qualifying vehicle. Confirm your eligibility and bring your VA documentation.
Can the Akron BMV title my vehicle? No. Vehicle titles are issued by the County Clerk of Courts, not the BMV. We handle registration and plates after the title is in your name. See our titles hub.
I’m deployed out of state, can I still renew? Often yes, by mail or online. Ohio accommodates service members stationed away from home and recognizes SCRA protections. Verify the current process on bmv.ohio.gov.
Do spouses and dependents get benefits here? Some accommodations extend to spouses and dependents (for licensing and registration timing). Bring your documentation and ask; specifics vary by program.
