          The #1 Reason for a failed BMV visit is the lack of proper documentation. 

Step One: is to make sure you have everything required to complete your transaction as quickly, efficiently and correctly on the first time.

If you are Renewing your Ohio vehicle plates / tags you will need:

-A Valid Ohio Drivers License or State ID

-An Ohio eCheck if vehicle is older than 2019 


You may renew your registration up to 90 days prior to expiration date: 
Passenger Vehicles (birthday) / Commercial Vehicles Registrations (in-service date
Temporary (45 day) Tags
Vehicle Registration Transfers
Salvage Vehicle Receipts
Vanity,Custom and Specialty Plates
Replacement Plates
Reinstatement Payments

                       Renew Your Ohio Vehicle Registration

All registrations may be renewed 90 days prior to expiration.

You can choose to mail in the renewal for or visit the Akron BMV with the following. 

  • A valid Ohio driver license or State of Ohio ID card
  • If leased, a lease agreement and power of attorney documents
  • If vehicle is in an E-Check county, E-Check will be required
  • Sign a proof of Financial Responsibility Statement. 


                          First-Time Issuance Temp Tags 

If a vehicle will be driven prior to a title being issued, then a temporary tag can be purchased from the Akron BMV. 


All registrants must provide the following (if applicable):

  • If leased, a lease agreement and power of attorney documents
  • If vehicle is 2019 and older in an E-Check county, E-Check will be required. 

Passanger Vehicles and Motor Cycles will need: 

    • Ohio Certificate of Title or Memorandum of Title
    • Ohio driver license, Ohio state ID or proof of Social Security number
    • Tax ID number if titled in a business name
